When a person suspects that there is a genuine haunting occurring in his or her home, there are a number of important things to watch for.

Hearing unexplainable voices or noises, having light turn themselves off and on, doors opening and closing on their own, items mysteriously disappearing and reappearing... all may be indicating that your home is haunted.   It is important that every strange event (no matter how slight), be carefully documented with the date and time of the occurrence... as well as the name of the person or persons who witnessed it.  There may be a pattern to your ghost or poltergeist's activity and, by keeping a journal, it may become apparent exactly when and where to expect the next incident to occur. Often times, ghostly activity will take place on a date or time which was important to the now deceased individual... such as the anniversary of his or her death.

But what exactly is a "haunting" and what causes it to happen?   In reality, nobody knows for certain what true hauntings are.  There are many theories about what hauntings actually are, and what can trigger them to begin.  Keep in mind that there may be a totally logical explanation for these strange activities, and the biggest percentage of reported hauntings usually have a "non-paranormal" source.  Only through careful investigation and analysis of these incidents, will a definitive answer hopefully be found.

So, you might ask... "What type of things should I really be looking for if I suspect my house is genuinely haunted?"  Here are a just few indicators that there may be genuine paranormal activity occurring in your home.

Disappearance & Reappearance of Objects

Having objects disappear, only to mysteriously return sometime later, could be an indication that you have a ghostly resident in your home.  The illusive object (or objects) may not be seen for days or even weeks... until it unexplainably reappears in an obvious place (usually, where it could not have been overlooked during the prior searches.)  The disappearing object could be anything from a set of keys to a piece of clothing.  Whatever the object, it's strange disappearance and subsequent reappearance could be an indication of a true haunting .

Unexplainable Noises

Voices (or whispers), banging sounds, rattling or scratching noise, low pitch groans, whistling or high pitched sounds.

Animals Behaving Strangely

Bizarre animal behavior could be an indication of a haunting.  Dogs and cats are very sensitive to the paranormal and possess finely tuned psychic abilities.  Animals may be able to sense spirit energy in a house, even before the resident is aware of it's presence.  A cat seemingly watching the movements of an invisible object in the room.... dogs barking at apparently unseen entities, or being afraid to go into a certain part of the house are some signs to watch for.

Unexplained Shadows or Images

These anomalies are often times glimpsed out of the corner of the witnesses' eye.  Sometimes, these shadows have been reported to have a human form.  Other observers have reported less distinctive shapes.

Doors or Cabinet Opening and Closing on Their Own

Not only doors, but also windows as well.  These events are not always witnessed by the occupant of the house.  It may be a case of finding a door or window open which was previously closed (or even locked).  On rare occasions, these anomalous openings and closing are actually witnessed by an observer.

Lights Switching Themselves on and off

Here again, not usually witnessed by the resident, these events are discovered when the observer enters a room which has had it's lighting source mysteriously switched on or off.  This type of phenomena may also happen with televisions, computers, radios or other electronic equipment.

A Feeling of Being Watched

At one time or another, we have all felt as though there was someone (or something) watching us, right?  It's not an uncommon feeling.  However, it may also be an indication that there is a paranormal presence in your home.   Try to be aware of this feeling when it comes over you, and take note of the type of feelings you are experiencing.  Does the presence feel loving and protecting, as though it were watching over you?  Or, does it have a more invasive feeling as though an invisible watcher was spying on you ...

possibly not wanting to  make it's presence known.
